Discovering Distributed Expertise
نویسنده
چکیده
This article provides an overview of expert finding systems which assist in the discovery of distributed expertise. We summarize requirements for expert finders, the current state of the art, and our corporately deployed expert finding system and its performance. We describe research directions in distributed expertise discovery and visualization. Introduction In a global economy, expertise is increasingly likely to be created and operate in a highly distributed fashion (Friedman, 2005). While clusters of competence will emerge (Porter 1998), the ability to find and foster global communities of interest and put diverse skills together for competitive advantage will be a critical success factor in a global market. Automating this competence discovery process will be come a key requirement. Expert Finding Systems (EFS), also called Expertise Location Systems (ELS) enable users to rapidly, accurately, inexpensively and securely/privately discover experts, expert networks, and the knowledge they contain. EFS need to support a number of key requirements including the ability to: Identify experts via self-nomination and/or automated analysis of expert communications, publications, and activities. Classify the type and level of expertise of individuals and communities. Validate the breadth and depth of expertise of an individual Recommend experts including the ability to rank order experts on multiple dimensions including skills, experience, certification and reputation.

The discovery, more than a decade ago, of the relation between DistributedComputing (DC) and Algebraic-Topology (AT) raised the specter of requiring checking task solvability to be intimately connected to expertise in AT. Yet, in the area of Centralized Algorithms proving a problem to be NP or PSPACE complete requires more algorithmic expertise than complexity one. In analogy, we show that in D...
متن کاملManaging Expertise in a Distributed Environment
Expertise is the primary resource and product of professional service and technical firms. These firms often organize around project teams that advise and work under contract for clients. A key problem for management is to deploy expertise in project teams so as to meet the expertise requirements of projects and clients. Because expertise may be geographically distributed across multiple sites,...
متن کاملDesign Flow for the Rapid Development of Distributed Sensor Network Applications
The exponential increase in the demands for the deployment of large-scale sensor networks, makes necessary the efficient development of functional applications. Nevertheless, the existence of scarce resources and the derived application complexity, impose significant issues and require high design expertise. Consequently, the probability of discovering design errors once the application is impl...
متن کاملExpertise Management in a Distributed Context
This paper explores the management of expertise in offshore outsourcing projects. While the study of expertise development and coordination gained some attention in recent years, much of this research has been on co-located teams. Little is known about the way expertise is managed in distributed contexts and the challenges distributed teams face when attempting to develop and share expertise. T...
متن کاملDevelopment of application for discovering and binding to published geospatial processes in distributed environments
Nowadays, society has recognized that the lack of access to spatial data and tools for their analysis is the limiting factor of economic development. It came to the realization that without the single information space, which is implemented in the form of spatial data infrastructures, a progressive business development is impossible. Spatial data infrastructures will support a variety of tasks,...
